artArctica festival 2016

THE FESTIVAL / PROGRAMME

artArctica festival 2016 (11.-13.2.2016) was our first festival. It took place in Vapaan Taiteen Tila, Helsinki—an old underground bomb-shelter, modified to look like the inside of an iceberg—and featured over 40 artists from 8 different Arctic countries.

During the festival there was a permanent exhibition of photography, visual arts, video installations, as well as an Arctic Library, museum exhibits, and a café. In the daytime the festival activities included discussions, workshops, performances, and film projections, whereas in the evening we had music, dance, poetry, and film projections.

Our collaborators for artArctica festival 2016 included
Global Music Centre, Nanoq Arctic Museum, Suomen Arktinen Klubi, City-Sámit, Uummannaq Polar Institute, Arctic Art Institute, Helsinki Poetry Connection, Skábmagovat Film Festival, Walhalla Film Office , Nordic House on the Faroe Islands, and Tjaldur: Finland-Faroe Islands Friendship Society.

We worked with artists, organisers, and scientists from Greenland, Denmark, Norway, Faroe Islands, Finland, Sweden, Lapland, Russia, and Canada, among others.

The festival was partly funded by Nordic Culture Point, Letterstedtska Föreningen and the City of Helsinki, as well as with the support of Walhalla ry, Nordic House on the Faroe Islands and Tjaldur – Friendship Society Finland-Faroe Islands organisations.
